About My Blog

So what’s it all about?

My goal is to help show you how you can reinvent yourself, using my own situation as a very public example! The blog will explore how I attempt to navigate post-Corporate life as well thinking through some of the Big Issues that will have a profound impact on us in coming years, such as the need to live sustainably, peak oil, etc. With a willingness to try new paths and ideas, I will figure things out as I go. I have no doubt I will make some really embarrassing mistakes – and will be happy to share them and laugh along with you. And I hope, once in a while, I’ll latch on to something that will be really useful for you to help with your own situation. Ultimately, this will be a tale of reinvention. Come along for the ride?

And the blog name? The Laughing what? Really?

So, back in Ancient Greece around 400 BCE, a guy named Democritus was known as the Laughing Philosopher. There’s just something about the name and concept of a “Laughing Philosopher” that I really like! It captures what I aspire to be – thoughtful and mindful, but NOT head-in-the-clouds theoretical or over-the-top serious. Middle age brings some very nice perspectives, not the least of which is that life really does run better with a sense of humor!

My favorite little factoid about my ancient namesake: at a time when everyone KNEW that everything in the that the world was made of the four elements (air, fire, earth, and water), Democritus believed that things were made of invisible particles – which, over two thousand years ago, he named atoms! So, not only was he a bit of a contrarian for his time, he ended up being right! Gotta love that combination!
